Chicharon maybe seen as an unhealthy food because of its high fat content. But recent studies have shown that sugar – not fat –is one of the reasons of many of our health problems.Cholesterol has a zero carbohydrate kind of food. Also, if you look at the kind of fat that’s in chicharon, you will find that a good proportion is actually mono-unsaturated – the same, healthy kind of fat found in olive oil, avocados, and macadamias. Some kinds of chicharon have as high as 40% of this “heart-healthy” fat.
But these facts doesn’t stop us from indulging ourselves in this “chili-cious” snack all the way from Sta. Maria, Bulacan. And was owned by Reynaldo Buenviaje since 2002.
Some of us favor the crispy thin skin of a cocktail chicharon, while others prefer the harder but saltier bite of chicharon na laman. But for some “Chili-licious talaga” chicharon is best partnered with your favorite beer or sometimes partnered with our own preferred vinegar or incorporated with other Pinoy party dishes, chicharon has and always will be part of the Filipino’s daily or occasional food dishes.
